Nice round-up! Glad you liked the ethics panel. I admit to being a bit over-awed at the other members of the panels I was on.

If you don't mind, I'd like to re-post your picture of the panel in my blog report on the con.

Thanks!

The thing I can never figure out is how that happens since you always use them together. (I do the Match-Up, too, with the same result. But, I don't usually wait for New Year's to do it.)

Be prepared to spend $$ on headsets on a regular basis - panasonic or plantronics brands are the best but even they will peter out after a solid 6-8 months of IBM wear and tear. Make sure you get a cordless phone that uses DECT (?) so it won't interfere with wireless networks. And invest on a decent monitor and raise it to eye-level to reduce neck strain.

Thanks, @jimmy. I've done about a half-dozen science-oriented Ignite talks; I appreciate what it takes to make that kind of presentation. Somewhere down the line, I got in the habit of making slide notes and posting the URL at the end of the talk. Part of the value of the prep was for me: I didn't have to worry as much about forgetting some detail when I talked.

I read quickly through the extension school article about bee nutrition. I didn't see any discussion about DNA damage in that paper.

Do you have any papers that discuss that? If there is widespread agreement about DNA damage, I'd expect to see a mention/referencein the WIkipedia CCD article.

Hey Calvin,
Thanks for your write-up and I'm glad you were introduced to the world of Ignite through our 3rd show in the triangle. We love getting feedback and comments from first time guests and I would like to hear how you heard about it? I am pleased you enjoyed the evening as it really is about the community and unleashing the passion of geeks over a few drinks. We had 14 amazing speakers this time and I think everyone learned something and was entertained. Our event was one of about 15 held on Wednesday night, with almost 70 other shows were held around the world on 5 continents for Global Ignite Week. We are going to be busy planning our next event in Raleigh later this summer, so stay tuned for more. P.s. you can rewatch any of the talks on our website and igniteshow.com in a matter of a of week or so.

Talk to you soon,
Ryan Boyles
Organizer
http://ignitedurham.com
http://igniteraleigh.com

floatingbones,

With 5mins there is no way to list footnotes/endnotes. I am more than willing to talk to anyone about life of the honey bee. The nutrition of honey bees has become a topic of conversation within the beekeeping community as one of the many factors involved with CCD. Poorly fed bees produce poor queens which produce poor weak bees.

Here is a VERY short research paper on basic nutrition of the honey bee...http://www.extension.org/pages/Honey_Bee_Nutrition.

Feel free to contact me and we can continue the conversation. If you would like a more stimulating scientific conversation I'll put you in touch with my beekeeping/entomologist daughter at NCSU.

I am laughing out loud. I have tried sales in the past, I was a failure at the cold call. That was also the 1st time I had given that presentation. The slides are the result of begging and pleading with the world's foremost honey bee photographer.

I am the Honey Beevangelist & I want to convert your soul to the beauty & mystery of the honey bee.

If I heard him correctly, the beekeeper claimed that substitute food and pollen fed to bees was damaging their DNA. If you look through the wikipedia article on colony collapse disorder, you'll see no mention of this. I also saw no mention of this on the beekeeper's blog. Since I also saw the Enlightened Skeptic's presentation, I will try to defer judgment on that lack of data so far.

It would be good if @Jimmy_C would provide some information backing up that claim. I'd also be interested in his feedback on the WIkipedia CCD article. Is it giving us the straight poop?

Calvin, great summary, loved your intro and describing Ignite vibe! I've been to all the local Ignites and this was the best by far. The Venue was awesome and presenters really kicked butt. Change the Triangle was really great as well as Shane Johnston (aka Beer Guy), Arik Abel, Tom Webster and Greg Ng. Jimmy C is one of the most passionate beekeepers you'll ever meet and try his honey it rocks too!
